Job Description

Role Overview

We are seeking a Staff Engineer with 6 to 9 years of hands-on experience in React Native to provide mobile technical leadership across one or more products within the ETPL AI portfolio. This role carries responsibility for mobile architecture, cross-platform engineering standards, application quality, and the technical development of mobile delivery teams.

The Staff Engineer will be the senior technical authority for React Native engineering within their product context, owning architectural decisions, defining mobile engineering standards, and ensuring that the applications they are responsible for are performant, scalable, maintainable, and built to serve diverse institutional user groups across varying devices, platforms, and connectivity conditions.

ETPL's mobile surfaces span a wide range of user types and workflows - students, faculty, administrators, employees, loan officers, cooperative members, and field teams - each with distinct usability, performance, and reliability requirements. The Staff Engineer will bring the architectural depth and leadership capability to build a mobile engineering practice that can serve this breadth with consistency and quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in the design, development, and evolution of React Native mobile applications across assigned ETPL AI products on both iOS and Android platforms.
  • Own mobile architecture decisions, including application structure, navigation architecture, state management strategy, offline data handling, API integration patterns, and native module design, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and cross-platform consistency.
  • Lead the design and implementation of a shared mobile component library, establishing consistent UI patterns, interaction standards, and accessibility guidelines across the ETPL AI product suite.
  • Lead and mentor a team of mobile engineers, conducting code reviews, architectural walkthroughs, and technical discussions that raise the capability and delivery quality of the broader team.
  • Translate complex product requirements and institutional user workflows into well-considered mobile architectures and implementation plans, in close collaboration with product managers, UX designers, and backend engineers.
  • Define and enforce mobile coding standards, component design guidelines, platform-specific best practices, and engineering governance frameworks across the mobile codebase.
  • Drive mobile performance optimisation at an architectural level, including rendering pipeline efficiency, memory management, JS thread optimisation, startup performance, and bundle size strategy, ensuring a high-quality experience across the device spectrum used by ETPL's institutional client base.
  • Own the mobile release engineering practice, including build pipelines, code signing, environment management, Play Store and App Store release governance, and OTA update strategy.
  • Evaluate, adopt, and govern the use of native modules, third-party libraries, and platform APIs, making principled decisions on build vs buy that balance capability, maintainability, and long-term risk.
  • Conduct architectural reviews and code audits to identify technical debt, performance risks, and structural issues within the mobile codebase, and lead their structured resolution.
  • Act as the escalation point for critical mobile issues and production incidents, leading structured root cause analysis across JS, native, and infrastructure layers.
  • Define and own the mobile testing strategy, including unit, component, integration, and end-to-end testing frameworks, ensuring meaningful automated coverage across the mobile product.
  • Champion a culture of engineering excellence, documentation discipline, and continuous improvement within the mobile engineering team.

Experience and Profile

  • 6 to 9 years of hands-on mobile engineering experience, with strong and sustained depth in React Native across both iOS and Android platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience architecting and delivering production-grade React Native applications for enterprise or SaaS products with complex, multi-role user workflows.
  • Experience building or significantly contributing to a shared mobile component library or cross-product design system.
  • Experience leading or mentoring mobile engineers within a structured delivery team.
  • Proven ability to make and communicate sound architectural decisions across application structure, state management, offline strategy, and native integration.
  • Deep familiarity with React Native's internals, including the new architecture (Fabric, JSI, TurboModules), Hermes engine, and bridge vs bridgeless communication models.
  • Prior exposure to enterprise mobile product contexts - applications with offline capability, biometric authentication, role-based access, or field usage in low-connectivity environments - is strongly preferred.
